What is it used for?
Meropenem injection is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as severe infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin, blood, or brain. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Meropenem kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall. Sodium carbonate helps maintain the stability of the injection.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. It should be used only as prescribed and the full prescribed course should be completed.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, headache, skin rash, and pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins, or other antibiotics; kidney disease; or a history of seizures. The dose may need adjustment in kidney problems. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty, or seizures. Meropenem can interact with valproate medicines.
