What is it used for?
Meropenem is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and other parts of the body. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a vein by a doctor or nurse, usually in a hospital or clinic. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, and medical advice. Complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, skin rash, and pain or inflammation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins or other antibiotics. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney problems. Use caution in people with a history of seizures. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, as it may indicate a serious bowel infection. Tell the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially valproate medicines, because meropenem can reduce their effect.
