What is it used for?
Meropenem is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin, blood and brain. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall, which stops the infection from spreading.

How to take/use it
Meropenem is usually given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, headache, rash, and pain, redness or swelling at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillin, cephalosporin or other antibiotics; kidney problems; or a history of seizures. The dose may need adjustment in kidney disease. Meropenem can interact with valproate medicines. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or seizures.
