What is it used for?
Meropenem injection is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including severe infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and other parts of the body. It is usually used in hospitals or under close medical supervision.

How does it work?
Meropenem kills bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, kidney function, age and other medical factors. Complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, and pain or inflammation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins or other antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney disease, a history of seizures, or use of valproate medicines, as dose adjustment or extra monitoring may be needed. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, seizures, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
