What is it used for?
This prescription antibiotic is used to treat serious bacterial infections. The exact infection, dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and the doctor's assessment.
How does it work?
Meropenem kills bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall. Sulbactam helps protect meropenem from enzymes produced by some bacteria that can make antibiotics less effective.
How to take/use it
It is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and duration are decided by the treating doctor based on the infection and kidney function. Do not stop treatment early unless advised.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, and pain or redness at the injection site may occur.
Precautions
Inform the doctor about allergies to penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems or other antibiotics; kidney problems; seizures; or use of valproate medicines. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or seizures.
