What is it used for?
Meropenem is a strong antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as severe infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin, blood, or brain. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall, which stops the infection from spreading.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection or infusion into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, headache, skin rash, and pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins, or other antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney disease, a history of seizures, or use of valproate medicines. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, seizures, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe skin reaction. Use only under medical supervision.
