What is it used for?
Mefenamic acid is used for short-term relief of mild to moderate pain, including period pain. It may also help reduce fever.

How does it work?
It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It reduces the production of substances called prostaglandins that cause pain, inflammation and fever.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with or after food and with water. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest recommended time. Do not take it with other NSAID painkillers unless advised by a doctor.

Common side effects
Stomach pain or indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, headache and dizziness.

Precautions
Avoid or seek medical advice before use if there is a history of stomach ulcer or bleeding, kidney or liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma triggered by painkillers, or an allergy to NSAIDs. It may increase the risk of stomach bleeding, especially with blood thinners, steroids or alcohol. Avoid during pregnancy, particularly after 20 weeks, unless specifically prescribed. Stop and seek urgent medical help for black stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a serious skin rash.
