What is it used for?
Loperamide is used to control diarrhoea (loose motions) by reducing the frequency of bowel movements. It may be used for short-term diarrhoea, but it does not treat the underlying infection or cause.

How does it work?
It slows the movement of food and fluids through the intestine, allowing more water to be absorbed and making stools less watery.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as directed on the package or by a healthcare professional. Drink plenty of fluids and consider oral rehydration fluids to help prevent dehydration. Do not use it for longer than recommended or continue it if diarrhoea worsens.

Common side effects
Constipation, nausea, stomach cramps, bloating, dry mouth, dizziness and headache.

Precautions
Do not use it for bloody or black stools, high fever, severe abdominal pain or a swollen abdomen unless advised by a doctor. Seek medical advice if diarrhoea lasts more than 48 hours, or if there are signs of dehydration. Avoid use during a flare-up of ulcerative colitis or severe diarrhoea after antibiotics unless medically advised. Use in children, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with liver disease only after medical advice. Do not exceed the recommended amount, as overdose can cause serious heart problems.
