What is it used for?
Ursodeoxycholic acid is used for certain liver and bile-duct conditions, including primary biliary cholangitis. It may also be prescribed to dissolve selected cholesterol gallstones when suitable.

How does it work?
It changes the composition of bile, helping bile flow more easily and reducing the amount of cholesterol in bile. This can help protect liver cells and gradually dissolve some cholesterol gallstones.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the medicine with water and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Treatment may require regular liver tests and follow-up.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, loose stools, stomach discomfort, abdominal pain, nausea or indigestion.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about gallbladder inflammation, blocked bile ducts, frequent biliary pain or liver disease. It is not suitable for all types of gallstones. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent abdominal pain, worsening jaundice or severe diarrhoea. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and use of other medicines should be discussed with a doctor.
