What is it used for?
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin and other parts of the body. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking enzymes they need to copy and repair their genetic material.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed and complete the recommended course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow with water. Antacids and supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc can reduce its absorption, so ask a doctor or pharmacist how to separate them from this medicine.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness and difficulty sleeping.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, heart rhythm problems, seizures, tendon problems, nerve problems, myasthenia gravis, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Stop the medicine and seek medical help for tendon pain or swelling, numbness or burning sensations, severe or persistent diarrhoea, serious rash or breathing difficulty, or a fast or irregular heartbeat. Avoid unnecessary strenuous exercise if tendon pain occurs.
