What is it used for?
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the lungs, sinuses, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking enzymes they need to copy and repair their DNA.

How to take/use it
Take only as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow with water, with or without food. Do not take it at the same time as antacids or supplements containing aluminium, magnesium, iron or zinc; follow the prescribed spacing instructions.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness and sleep problems.

Precautions
Seek medical help for tendon pain or swelling, numbness or tingling, severe mood or behaviour changes, fainting, a fast or irregular heartbeat, severe diarrhoea, or signs of a serious allergy. Use cautiously in people with kidney disease, heart-rhythm problems, seizure disorders, or a history of tendon problems. Avoid strenuous exercise if tendon pain occurs. Take medical advice before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and do not drive if dizzy or affected.
