What is it used for?
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin and other areas, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not treat viral infections such as common colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking enzymes they need to copy and repair their DNA.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the treatment course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow with water and do not take it at the same time as antacids or supplements containing aluminium, magnesium, iron or zinc; follow the separation instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist. Do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness and sleep disturbances.

Precautions
Use only on medical advice. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, heart rhythm problems, seizures, diabetes, tendon disorders or previous reactions to quinolone antibiotics. Avoid strenuous exercise if tendon pain or swelling develops. Stop the medicine and seek urgent medical help for tendon pain or rupture, severe or persistent diarrhoea, numbness or tingling, severe mood or nerve symptoms, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, or an allergic reaction. Take medical advice before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
