What is it used for?
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as some infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin and other parts of the body. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking enzymes that bacteria need to grow and multiply.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless a healthcare professional advises otherwise. Swallow the tablet with water. Do not take it at the same time as antacids or supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc; follow the prescribed spacing instructions.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness and sleep disturbance may occur.

Precautions
Use only on medical advice. Stop taking it and seek medical help for tendon pain or swelling, severe or persistent diarrhoea, numbness or tingling, severe mood or nerve-related changes, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or a serious allergic reaction. Tell the healthcare professional if there is a history of tendon problems, seizures, heart-rhythm problems, kidney disease, or if pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure and report severe skin reactions.
