What is it used for?
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as some infections of the lungs, sinuses, urinary tract, skin and other tissues. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by blocking enzymes that bacteria need to copy and repair their genetic material.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, with plenty of water. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional tells otherwise. Take it at least 2 hours before or after antacids or supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness and difficulty sleeping.

Precautions
Use only on medical advice. Stop taking it and seek medical help for tendon pain or swelling, numbness or tingling, severe mood or nervous-system changes, a severe allergic reaction, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Tell the healthcare professional about pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney disease, seizures, heart-rhythm problems, myasthenia gravis or previous tendon problems. Avoid unnecessary strong sunlight and use sun protection.
