What is it used for?
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the lungs, sinuses, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking enzymes they need to copy and repair their DNA.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Swallow with plenty of water. Do not take it at the same time as antacids or products containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc; keep a gap of at least 2 hours before or after these products. Do not self-medicate with antibiotics.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness and difficulty sleeping.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, heart-rhythm problems, seizures, diabetes, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or previous tendon problems. Stop the medicine and seek medical help for tendon pain or swelling, numbness or tingling, severe or persistent diarrhoea, an irregular heartbeat, severe mood or nerve-related symptoms, or signs of a serious allergy. Avoid driving if dizzy or affected.
