What is it used for?
Itraconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat fungal infections, including infections of the skin, nails, mouth, vagina and, in some cases, internal organs. The exact use depends on the type and severity of the infection.

How does it work?
It stops fungi from making ergosterol, a substance needed to maintain their cell membranes. This prevents the fungi from growing and helps clear the infection.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended course. If this is an itraconazole capsule, take it immediately after a full meal and swallow it whole. Do not change the dose or stop treatment early without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhoea or constipation, headache, dizziness, rash and changes in liver function tests.

Precautions
Itraconazole has many important medicine interactions, so inform the doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines and supplements being taken. Tell the doctor if there is liver disease, heart failure or a history of heart problems. Seek medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe rash, breathing difficulty or swelling of the legs. Use during pregnancy only when specifically prescribed. Antacids and medicines that reduce stomach acid may affect absorption; ask a doctor or pharmacist how to take them with itraconazole.
