What is it used for?
Itraconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat fungal infections of the skin, nails, mouth, vagina and other parts of the body, as prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It stops fungi from making ergosterol, a substance they need to build and maintain their cell membranes. This prevents the fungi from growing and helps clear the infection.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended course, even if symptoms improve. Follow the instructions for the specific formulation, as capsules and oral solutions may need to be taken differently. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache, dizziness and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heart failure, pregnancy or plans to become pregnant. Itraconazole can interact with many medicines, including some heart, cholesterol and sedative medicines, so provide a complete list of medicines being taken. Seek medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe tiredness, breathing difficulty, swelling of the legs or a severe skin reaction.
