What is it used for?
This medicine is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be prescribed when metformin alone does not control blood sugar adequately, or when both medicines are needed together.

How does it work?
Sitagliptin helps the body release more insulin and reduce glucagon when blood sugar is high. Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually with meals to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet as directed and do not stop treatment without medical advice. The dose may need adjustment based on kidney function and other medicines.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, headache and cold-like symptoms may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when used with insulin or sulfonylurea medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, dehydration, severe infection, heavy alcohol use, or planned surgery or contrast-dye scans. Seek medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, unusual weakness, or signs of an allergic reaction. Kidney function may need checking, and long-term metformin use can reduce vitamin B12 levels.
