What is it used for?
Iron sucrose is used to treat iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia, especially when oral iron is not suitable, has not worked well, or iron replacement is needed under medical supervision.
How does it work?
It supplies iron that the body uses to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
How to take/use it
This medicine is given slowly into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and number of treatments depend on the severity of iron deficiency and the medical condition. It should not be self-administered.
Common side effects
Nausea, headache, dizziness, flushing, changes in blood pressure, and pain or irritation at the injection site may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to iron injections, iron overload, liver disease, or other medical conditions. Blood pressure and allergic reactions should be monitored during and after administration. Seek immediate medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe dizziness, or fainting.
