What is it used for?
Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine used mainly to relieve itching caused by allergies or skin conditions. It may also be prescribed for short-term anxiety or to cause drowsiness before a medical procedure.

How does it work?
It blocks histamine, a substance involved in itching and allergic symptoms. It can also slow activity in the brain, causing a calming and drowsy effect.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by the doctor, with or without food. Do not take more or use it for longer than advised. Avoid driving or operating machinery until its effects are known.

Common side effects
Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, headache, constipation and difficulty passing urine.

Precautions
Avoid alcohol and check with a doctor before using it with sleeping tablets, sedatives, opioid pain medicines or other medicines that cause drowsiness. Tell the doctor about heart rhythm problems, prolonged QT interval, glaucoma, difficulty passing urine, liver or kidney disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, or severe allergic symptoms.
