What is it used for?
Hydroxychloroquine is used to prevent or treat malaria. It is also used, under medical supervision, to manage autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

How does it work?
It interferes with the growth of malaria parasites. In autoimmune conditions, it helps reduce abnormal immune-system activity and inflammation.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with food or milk to reduce stomach upset. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Do not use it to prevent or treat malaria unless prescribed for that purpose.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness and skin rash.

Precautions
Long-term treatment can rarely affect the eyes, so regular eye examinations may be needed. Seek medical help for blurred vision, difficulty seeing, severe skin rash, unusual muscle weakness, fainting or irregular heartbeat. Tell the doctor about heart rhythm problems, eye disease, liver or kidney problems, low blood sugar, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, and provide a list of all medicines being taken.
