What is it used for?
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ear, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin and teeth. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed dose and schedule, and complete the course even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share leftover antibiotics with others.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to amoxicillin, penicillin or related antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe skin rash. Contact a doctor for severe or persistent diarrhoea, especially during or after treatment. Tell the doctor about kidney problems, glandular fever (mononucleosis), pregnancy, breastfeeding and other medicines being used.
