What is it used for?
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, throat, chest, skin, urinary tract and other areas. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The dose and treatment duration depend on the infection, age, weight and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may usually be taken with or without food. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share them with others.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to amoxicillin, penicillin or related antibiotics. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin reaction. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or contains blood. Use only on medical advice, especially in people with kidney problems or a history of antibiotic-related allergic reactions.
