What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria. Clavulanic acid helps protect amoxicillin from enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing it to work against a wider range of infections.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share this medicine or use leftover doses. The dose and treatment duration depend on the infection and should be determined by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, skin rash and thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanic acid or similar antibiotics. Tell the doctor about previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, kidney disease, allergies or glandular fever. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, a severe rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
