What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, urinary tract and skin. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by damaging their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps prevent some bacteria from breaking down amoxicillin, allowing it to work against a wider range of bacteria.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by the doctor. Take each dose at the recommended time and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them for a future illness.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, skin rash and thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanic acid or related antibiotics. Tell the doctor about previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, kidney problems, allergies, or suspected glandular fever. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe rash, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
