What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, sinuses, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin and teeth. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by affecting their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps prevent some bacteria from breaking down amoxicillin, making the antibiotic effective against a wider range of bacteria.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed dose and schedule, and complete the full course even if symptoms improve. Taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. If it is a liquid preparation, shake well before use and measure each dose accurately.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur. Thrush can also develop in some people.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanic acid or related antibiotics. Tell the doctor about previous antibiotic-related liver problems, glandular fever, kidney or liver disease, pregnancy, or other medicines being taken. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
