What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps protect amoxicillin from enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with a meal or snack to reduce stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share it or use leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, skin rash and oral or vaginal thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanic acid or related antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, glandular fever, or other medicines being taken. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe rash, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea. Use only when prescribed for a bacterial infection.
