What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by interfering with their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps prevent some bacteria from breaking down amoxicillin, allowing it to work against a wider range of bacteria.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor. Take each dose with a meal or snack to reduce stomach upset, and complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them for a future illness.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, headache, skin rash and thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, other beta-lactam antibiotics or clavulanic acid. Tell the doctor about previous antibiotic-related liver problems, kidney disease, glandular fever or other allergies. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe skin reaction, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only when prescribed, as unnecessary antibiotic use can cause resistance.
