What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, lungs, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and teeth. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by affecting their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps protect amoxicillin from enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing it to work against a wider range of infections.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor. Follow the prescribed dose and schedule, and complete the full course even if symptoms improve. Taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion, skin rash and thrush may occur.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanic acid or similar antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, previous antibiotic-related jaundice or liver problems, and any history of severe antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a severe skin reaction. Contact a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, persistent or contains blood.
