What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ear, sinuses, throat, lungs, skin, urinary tract and teeth. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid helps protect amoxicillin from enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and complete the recommended course, even if symptoms improve. Take doses with food to reduce stomach upset and use a proper measuring device if it is a liquid medicine. Do not share leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, other beta-lactam antibiotics or a previous severe reaction to this medicine. Tell the doctor about liver or kidney problems and any history of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe or blistering rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
