What is it used for?
Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid is a prescription antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and teeth. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxicillin kills susceptible bacteria by damaging their protective cell wall. Clavulanic acid blocks enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to amoxicillin, helping the antibiotic work effectively.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed and follow the instructions for the specific product and route of administration. Take doses at evenly spaced times and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them for future illnesses.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur. Taking oral doses with food may help reduce stomach upset.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, other beta-lactam antibiotics or clavulanic acid. Inform the doctor about kidney or liver disease and any previous antibiotic-related jaundice or severe diarrhoea. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe or blistering rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
