What is it used for?
Used to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, along with a suitable diet and exercise. It is prescribed when one medicine alone is not enough to control blood glucose.

How does it work?
Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and helps the body use insulin better. Gliclazide helps the pancreas release more insulin, which lowers blood sugar.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, usually with or just after food to reduce stomach upset. Take it at the same time each day and do not change the dose or stop it without medical advice. Do not take an extra dose if one is missed; follow the advice provided by the doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, indigestion, reduced appetite and a metallic taste may occur. Low blood sugar can cause sweating, shakiness, dizziness, hunger, weakness or confusion, especially if meals are missed.

Precautions
Monitor blood sugar regularly. Do not skip meals or drink excessive alcohol, as this may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Inform the doctor about kidney or liver disease, heavy alcohol use, severe infection, dehydration, planned surgery or an X-ray scan using contrast dye. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, unusual sleepiness or confusion. This medicine is generally not used for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis unless specifically directed by a specialist.
