What is it used for?
Glimepiride is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
It stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, helping lower blood sugar. It works only when the pancreas can still produce insulin.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with food, and do not skip meals after taking it. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the advice provided by the doctor or pharmacist rather than taking an extra dose.

Common side effects
Low blood sugar, dizziness, headache, nausea and weight gain. Low blood sugar may cause sweating, shaking, hunger, weakness, confusion or a fast heartbeat.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is kidney or liver disease. Tell the doctor about all medicines being taken, and avoid excessive alcohol because it may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Take extra care when driving or operating machinery if dizziness or low blood sugar occurs. Seek medical advice during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and report symptoms of severe or repeated low blood sugar promptly.
