What is it used for?
Cefuroxime injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, abdomen, bones or joints, and blood. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, kidney function and other medical factors. Complete the prescribed course unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain or irritation at the injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash and temporary changes in liver blood tests may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there has been an allergy to cefuroxime, cephalosporins, penicillins or other antibiotics, or if there is kidney disease. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty or a severe skin reaction. Contact a doctor for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, as this may occur during or after antibiotic treatment.
