What is it used for?
Tranexamic acid is used to reduce or control excessive bleeding, including heavy menstrual bleeding. It may also be prescribed for certain other types of bleeding.
How does it work?
It helps prevent blood clots from breaking down too quickly, which helps reduce bleeding.
How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor. Swallow the tablet with water and do not take more than the prescribed amount. The dose and treatment duration depend on the cause and severity of bleeding.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache and dizziness.
Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is a history of blood clots, kidney disease, vision problems or an allergy to tranexamic acid. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, or painful swelling in an arm or leg. Report changes in vision or unusually heavy or persistent bleeding. Extra caution may be needed with hormonal contraceptives or medicines that affect blood clotting.
