What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ear, throat, lungs, urinary tract and other areas, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall, which stops the infection from spreading.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting may occur. Skin rash can also occur.
Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to cefixime, cephalosporins or penicillin-type antibiotics, and about kidney disease. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
