What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the ear, throat, airways and urinary tract. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
Cefixime kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by a doctor. Take it at the prescribed times and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. If using an oral suspension, shake it well before each use and measure the prescribed amount carefully.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and mild skin rash may occur.
Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney problems or a previous antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a widespread rash. Use only for a diagnosed or suspected bacterial infection as advised by a doctor.
