What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, throat, airways, urinary tract and other areas, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

How does it work?
Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion, vomiting and headache may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea or any medicine allergies. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only for a bacterial infection diagnosed or considered likely by a doctor.
