What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including some infections of the ear, throat, lungs, urinary tract and other areas. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from forming their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria and helps clear the infection.
How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by the doctor. Follow the recommended dose and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share this medicine or use leftover antibiotics.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and skin rash may occur.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about any previous allergy to cefixime, cephalosporins or penicillin-type antibiotics. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling, breathing difficulty or a widespread rash. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney problems. Use in children only under medical supervision.
