What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, ears, airways and urinary tract. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall, helping to clear the infection.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share it or use leftover antibiotics. It may be taken with or without food unless otherwise directed.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and headache. Mild skin rash may also occur.

Precautions
Do not use if allergic to cefixime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or if a serious penicillin allergy has occurred without medical advice. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only for a confirmed or suspected bacterial infection as advised by a doctor.
