What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, ears, lungs, urinary tract and other susceptible areas. It does not work against viral infections such as common cold or flu.
How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from forming their protective cell wall, which kills the bacteria and helps clear the infection.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share it or use leftover antibiotics.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting may occur. Skin rash can also occur.
Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea or colitis, and any history of severe medicine allergies. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
