What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ear, throat, airways and urinary tract. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.
How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share this medicine or use leftover antibiotics.
Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and vomiting may occur. Skin rash can also occur.
Precautions
Do not take it if there has been a serious allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or certain penicillin antibiotics, unless advised by a doctor. Tell the doctor about kidney disease or a history of severe diarrhoea after antibiotics. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
