What is it used for?
Used to prevent or treat iron and folic acid deficiency, which can lead to nutritional anaemia and tiredness. It supports the formation of healthy red blood cells and may be prescribed when increased nutritional needs occur, such as during pregnancy.

How does it work?
Iron helps make haemoglobin, the substance that carries oxygen in the blood. Folic acid and vitamin B12 support the formation and normal development of red blood cells.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as directed by a doctor or according to the product label. It is usually better absorbed on an empty stomach, but it may be taken with food if it causes stomach upset. Avoid taking it at the same time as antacids, calcium supplements, tea or coffee; ask a pharmacist about the appropriate interval. Do not exceed the recommended amount.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea and dark-coloured stools. Mild stomach upset may improve when taken with food.

Precautions
Keep out of reach of children, as an iron overdose can be dangerous. Tell the doctor if there is iron overload, a blood disorder, or a history of stomach or intestinal problems. Folic acid may mask some signs of vitamin B12 deficiency, so medical advice is important when anaemia has not been properly diagnosed. Tell the doctor or pharmacist about other medicines and supplements being taken.
