What is it used for?
Artesunate injection is used for the urgent treatment of severe malaria, including malaria caused by Plasmodium parasites. It is usually given in a hospital or medical facility.
How does it work?
Artesunate rapidly kills malaria parasites in the blood, helping to control the infection. Sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride are used to prepare and dilute the injection.
How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a trained healthcare professional. It must be prepared using the supplied diluents and used only according to the prescribed treatment plan. Do not self-inject.
Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, fever, weakness, and pain or irritation at the injection site may occur. Changes in blood counts or liver tests can also occur.
Precautions
Severe malaria requires urgent medical care and monitoring. Inform the healthcare professional about any previous reaction to artesunate or other antimalarial medicines. Delayed breakdown of red blood cells can rarely occur days or weeks after treatment; follow-up blood tests may be needed. Seek immediate medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling, severe rash, unusual tiredness, pale skin, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.
