What is it used for?
Febuxostat is used for the long-term treatment of gout and high uric acid levels. It helps prevent uric acid crystal build-up and future gout attacks. It is not a painkiller and does not provide immediate relief during an acute gout attack.
How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called xanthine oxidase, which reduces the body's production of uric acid.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and continue it regularly, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not stop or change the dose without medical advice.
Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, joint pain, skin rash, and changes in liver function tests. Gout attacks may temporarily become more frequent when treatment is started.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heart disease, or a previous heart attack or stroke. Seek medical help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, severe rash, facial swelling, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Do not use with azathioprine or mercaptopurine unless specifically directed by a doctor. Take it during an acute gout attack only as advised by the doctor.
