What is it used for?
Febuxostat is used for the long-term treatment of gout caused by high uric acid levels. It helps prevent uric acid crystal build-up and future gout attacks, but it is not used to provide immediate relief during a sudden gout attack.

How does it work?
It lowers uric acid production in the body by blocking an enzyme called xanthine oxidase.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Do not stop treatment without medical advice, even if symptoms improve. A gout flare can occur when treatment is first started; continue the medicine and contact a doctor for advice.

Common side effects
Gout flare-ups, nausea, joint pain, skin rash, and changes in liver function tests may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about heart disease, stroke, liver disease, or kidney disease before starting treatment. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, or a severe skin rash, blistering, or swelling. Do not take febuxostat with azathioprine or mercaptopurine unless specifically directed by a doctor. Regular medical follow-up and blood tests may be needed.
