What is it used for?
Etoricoxib is used to relieve pain, swelling and stiffness caused by arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It may also be prescribed for short-term treatment of acute gout and other painful conditions.

How does it work?
It selectively blocks COX-2 enzymes that produce chemicals responsible for pain and inflammation. This helps reduce pain, swelling and stiffness.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water; it may be taken with or without food. Do not take more than the prescribed amount or combine it with other anti-inflammatory painkillers unless advised by a doctor.

Common side effects
Indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, swelling of the feet or legs, and increased blood pressure.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is a history of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, stomach ulcer or bleeding, kidney disease, liver disease, or allergy to aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medicines. It may increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, especially with long-term use or in people with cardiovascular risk factors. Avoid use during pregnancy unless specifically advised. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, black stools, severe allergic reactions or unusual swelling.
