What is it used for?
Esomeprazole is used to reduce excess stomach acid and treat acidity, heartburn, acid reflux (GERD), and acid-related stomach or intestinal ulcers. It may also be used with antibiotics for certain stomach infections when prescribed by a doctor.
How does it work?
It is a proton pump inhibitor that blocks the release of acid in the stomach. This helps relieve heartburn and allows acid-damaged tissues to heal.
How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed. Swallow the capsule or tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it. It is commonly taken before food, as directed by the doctor.
Common side effects
Headache, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, and gas.
Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Inform the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially clopidogrel, warfarin, digoxin, phenytoin, or methotrexate. Seek medical advice for difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, or persistent symptoms. Long-term use should be monitored by a doctor.
