What is it used for?
Amikacin injection is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the lungs, blood, abdomen, urinary tract and other parts of the body. It is usually used when other antibiotics may not be suitable or effective.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making essential proteins, which kills the bacteria or prevents their growth.

How to take/use it
Amikacin is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a healthcare professional. The dose and treatment duration depend on the infection, kidney function, age and body weight. Do not self-inject or stop treatment early unless advised by the doctor.

Common side effects
Pain at the injection site, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and headache may occur. Serious effects can include kidney problems, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness or balance problems.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney disease, hearing or balance problems, dehydration, or muscle-weakness disorders. Kidney function and, when needed, hearing should be monitored during treatment. Inform the doctor about all medicines being used, especially other antibiotics or medicines that may affect the kidneys or hearing. Seek medical help promptly for reduced urination, swelling, ringing in the ears, hearing changes, severe dizziness or breathing difficulty.
