What is it used for?
Doxycycline is an antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections. It may also be prescribed for certain skin conditions, such as acne, when considered appropriate by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops susceptible bacteria from making proteins needed for their growth and survival, helping control the infection.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the recommended course. Swallow with a full glass of water while sitting or standing, and do not lie down immediately afterwards. Keep it separate from antacids and supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. Follow the product label or prescription for the exact dose and timing.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach upset, heartburn or irritation of the food pipe, headache, and increased sensitivity to sunlight.

Precautions
Avoid excessive sunlight and use protective clothing and sunscreen. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver problems, or an allergy to tetracycline antibiotics. Use in young children only when specifically prescribed. Seek medical advice for severe or persistent diarrhoea, difficulty swallowing, severe skin reactions, or signs of an allergic reaction.
